A car parking shake-up is planned in Stafford and Stone town centres in a bid to help ease traffic congestion.

Shoppers, commuters and traders are being asked to take part in a survey aimed at solving the borough's car parking headaches which add to hold-ups on major routes like the A518, A449 and A34.

Stafford Borough Council is asking for views on how much parking is needed in Stafford and Stone town centres. It will then draw up a strategy for future parking needs up to 2016.

The county town's parking problems were identified as long ago as 2006 when a study by Staffordshire County Council found demand for parking was not being met at certain times of the day.

The closure of the Bridge Street multi-storey and the long-running saga over its future has added to the problem.

The council says it is committed to delivering a high quality service that meets the needs and expectations of customers.

An online survey has been launched and consultation runs until October 31.

Councillor Doug Davis, cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: "It is important we get as many comments from people in our community, and visitors, to help us ensure we meet the needs for car parking in the borough."

The strategy also looks at levels of congestion on borough roads and ways to encourage alternatives to the car including public transport, cycling and walking.

It takes into account the imminent opening of the new multi-storey car park at Stafford railway station.

The strategy will also involve a review of existing parking contracts and leases and current charges.

The council is considering possible introduction of evening and Sunday charges on its town centre car parks.
