Charlatans drummer Jon Brookes was today recovering in hospital after collapsing on stage in America.

The 41-year-old, who lives in Burntwood, suffered a seizure as the group performed in Philadelphia.

The band is due to appear at the Academy in Birmingham on October 23 and it was today unclear whether the show will go ahead.

Their performance at Philadelphia venue Johnny Brenda's on Wednesday night was cut short following Brookes' collapse.

He is believed to have stopped breathing and was attended to by a doctor from the audience before being taken to the nearby St Joseph's Hospital where he remains after having a scan.

The band's scheduled performances in Montreal last night and Toronto tonight have been postponed.

A statement on the group's website says: "Brookes is in hospital awaiting further tests, although his condition is said to be improving and doctors believe there will be no long term effects on his health."
