Desperate jobseeker Steven Finnegan has come up with a novel way to get a job - by advertising himself at one of the Black Country's busiest traffic islands.

The 42-year-old out of work forklift truck driver spent yesterday at Oldbury's Birchley Island together with a placard pleading for someone to give him a job.

Mr Finnegan, who has been out of work for six months, said he was desperate and would be interested in all offers of employment.

He said: "I have been out of work for six months, and this is the only way I can get a job.

"I have been to the Job Centre and they are not much help. The reason I picked here is I thought this is a busy place." The traffic island, close to Junction 2 of the M5, is one of the main gateways into Sandwell, carrying 92,000 drivers a day.

Unmarried Mr Finnegan added he had been at the site since 7.30am and had been approached by at least two motorists who took down his contact details.

He added: "Life is really hard at the moment, but I'm willing to do any type of work at all.

"I've had some good responses, people have just really said fair play to what I'm doing."
