Owners of the Peel Centre on the A449 Stafford Street want to spend £15 million on the development and have offered to build a £2 million roundabout with traffic lights to get it under way.

The 100,000 sq ft store is being lined up in place of the Stratstone Jaguar dealership next to the Peel Centre, which is home to JJB Sports and Focus DIY.

A roundabout with traffic lights is being considered for the A449 at its junction with Cannock Road, next to the shopping centre and the vacant site of the former Elephant and Castle pub, which was demolished in 2001.

Three supermarkets are in discussions with site owners Peel Holdings about launching a store there.

Gareth Finch, property planning manager at Peel Holdings, said today: "This shows the high standard of design we are aiming for to deliver a considerable visual improvement, setting a benchmark for future design quality along Stafford Street."

He added that the image was indicative of the quality of design they wanted to achieve.
