Rain was causing further problems for drivers today as two lanes on the M6 were shut northbound between junction five at Castle Bromwich and junction six at Spaghetti Junction following a car crash.

The female driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A pensioner died after she was knocked down by a lorry in Rowley Regis. The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was killed after the accident near to the crossroads separating Holly Road and Ross yesterday.

A second woman died and another was taken to hospital after a car crashed into a tree in Wood End Road, Wednesfield.

The victim was a rear seat passenger in the white Citroen Saxo who suffered a heart attack. The driver of the car, a woman in her 20s, was also taken to hospital just after 3pm.

In a separate incident on Neachells Lane in Wednesfield a woman in her 50s had to be cut from her car after it hit a wall at Wednesfield Conservative Club.

Last night a boy, aged 10, suffered serious head and leg injuries after being knocked down by a car in Bilston. The crash happened in Wilkinson Avenue at around 8.10pm.

He went to Birmingham Children's Hospital. The driver of the car, a woman in her 20s, was uninjured.

Meanwhile, the driver of a Citroen Picasso thought to be in his late 20s was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital with a suspected spinal injury after a three-car collision in Goscote Lane in the town just after 4pm.

And a man and a nine-year-old boy were also cut free from a Suzuki Vitara after it crashed into a lamp post and fence in Grange Lane, Lye yesterday.
