Animal lovers have offered to take on greyhounds left homeless after retiring from the racetrack following an appeal in the Express & Star.

The Retired Greyhound Trust made a desperate plea for homes for the 40 former greyhounds being held in kennels in Essington, South Staffordshire.

And bosses there said they have had an "amazing response" to last week's appeal from dog lovers across the region.

Twelve of the dogs are now heading to a new life in loving homes, although more are still needed.

One family has also come forward to foster greyhounds which could not be kept in kennels, while another has stepped forward as a volunteer.

Alison Bandurak, from Monmore Green Retired Greyhound Trust in Hilton Lane, Essington, said: "The response has been remarkable and we would like to say a big thank you to all of those Express & Star readers who have come forward to give loving homes to our retired greyhounds.

"We were 42 dogs down on last year's rehoming figures at the end of July so this is really helping us to get back on track.

"It's not too late for anyone who is still interested in giving a home to a greyhound."
