A Dudley councillor said that by not cutting the grass (and making local communities untidy) the council would save £30,000 a year.

As an example of this, council members should take a look at the back of the bungalows in our street. It is a national disgrace and also a major fire hazard. To save £30,000, the council has to make two workers redundant.

A much better way would be to make four councillors redundant. That would save well over £30,000.

The Prime Minister says he is going to put the running of local communities in the hands of the people, then there will be no need to pay any councillors.

Councils were run by volunteers not too many years ago, and I am sure there are people about today who would form a voluntary council made up of former businessmen and women.
