Controversial traffic lights at a motorway junction in Wolverhampton, near the i54 business park site, will be switched on this Sunday.

They are part of a £2.6 million project at Junction 2 of the M54 but drivers are warned of possible Monday rush-hour hold-ups as the "intelligent" lights will not at first be used to improve traffic flow around an island, used by 49,000 cars daily.

Lights use latest technology to automatically adjust timings to optimise traffic flow but first need to capture data from sensors in the road to vary timings based on traffic conditions.

Workers spent four months widening slip roads and installing lights as part of a project including new lane markings around the island as well as extra lanes added to slip roads and to the A449 Stafford Road to increase capacity.

Fifty one collisions over the five years were 'slight.'
