A holidaymaker from Kingswinford died after falling down steps on a coach as it arrived at his holiday hotel.

Great-grandfather James Hartill, aged 79, was travelling with wife of 58 years Gwen, 77, when it happened.

Retired draughtsman Mr Hartill, of Cottage Street, fell down stairs at the rear of the coach as it reversed into the car park of the Water's Edge Hotel, Torquay, Devon.

His daughter today said he lost his balance and hit his head in stairway when he fell losing conciousness.

Another coach driver tried to give first aid before paramedics arrived and took him to Torbay Hospital on Monday evening.

He died yesterday morning. The couple were at the start of a five day trip with Chesterfield-based coach operator Travel Style when the tragedy happened.

Mr Hartill's daughter Chris, 45, today said the family were "devastated" by what had happened calling it a "tragic accident".

He was leader of Kingswinford Youth Club and had also been a member of the Kingswinford Wine Club.

He also leaves daughters Carol, 57, Denise, 51, and son Darryl, 40. He had seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

"My father was a popular member of the community and everyone would know of him," said Chris. Police confirmed a man died of his injuries at hospital yesterday.

Travelstyle spokeswoman Vicky McDonald today said: "Our condolences go out to the family but at the moment we do not think it is appropriate for us to comment any further as there is a police investigation ongoing."

South Devon Coroner Ian Arrow has been informed of the death and an inquest is due to open in the next few days.

The manager of the hotel declined to comment today.
