A man stabbed to death on the doorstep of his home in the Black Country was a father of six who had just returned from an evening out, it was revealed today.

Carpenter Charlie Kelly, aged 57, was attacked outside his home in Marshall Road, Oldbury, on Friday night. He had lived in the road for nearly 30 years.

Wife Marlene and neighbour Marg Figg are believed to have gone to his aid before he was taken to City Hospital in Birmingham, where he later died.

A police cordon and forensic tent were placed outside the house, close to the junction with Bleakhouse Road, until Saturday evening. Mr Kelly lived at the address with his wife and some of his children, now in their 20s.

It is believed only his wife was in at the time of the attack. Neighbour Mrs Figg has lived next door to the Kelly family for 10 years with her husband Roger.

She said: "He was a hardworking family man, he always used to wave through the window and would always say hello and even jetwashed our paving slabs.

"They always have the kids and grandkids over, it is lovely and they are a united loving family who are good neighbours."

The stabbing happened just before 10pm. Police said the victim was drinking in the George Pub on George Road, Warley, earlier in the evening.
