Five men attempted to hold up the Sonas store in Vicarage Road, Amblecote last night, but were thwarted when staff set off an intruder alarm.

No-one was injured in the raid, which happened at 9pm.

Detective sergeant Maria Cook said: "This group of men were intent on robbing the store when they threatened staff and customers but were thwarted by the alarm being raised quite quickly.

"The men fled the scene on foot, and the quick response of our officers meant that we were able to make two arrests swiftly after the incident.

"This kind of incident is rare in the area and officers will be on patrol to reassure local residents today."

The raiders were black, and wore dark clothing and balaclavas or masks.

Two 17-year-olds have been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and were today continuing to help police with their enquiries.
