A man has been shot twice in the stomach while walking along a street in Hamstead, Great Barr.

Old Walsall Road was sealed off today and half-a-mile diversions put in place following the shooting at 11pm yesterday.

The road closure resulted in tailbacks for rush-hour drivers today.

Police were today still on scene. West Midlands Police spokesman Steve Garey said: "A man walking along Old Walsall Road at about 11pm sustained two gunshot wounds to the stomach and is detained in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

"At this early stage the precise circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear but it is thought the offender or offenders made off in a car.

"Police inquiries are ongoing and people are urged to avoid Old Walsall Road.
