A football crazy England fan from the Black Country has shown his true colours - by getting the roof of his home painted red and white.

The top of the semi-detached home belonging to Dave Evans has been coated with a St George's Cross not just once, but four times.

It is the handiwork of trained roofer pals Dean Bateman, Dave Stevens and Sid Allen, who all agreed to help him show his backing for England at the World Cup.

The idea came after Dean painted his own roof four years ago and egged on his friend to have the same done this time around with masonry paint. Dave received the all-clear from his wife Julie on the agreement a new roof was needed soon and would replace the newly-decorated one at their Oldbury home after the tournament.

Four St George's Crosses were painted on at the weekend, along with a string of bunting, another flag and a banner reading "Come on England" at the house in Grafton Road.

The 46-year-old parcel delivery driver said: "We were chatting in the pub and it was said to me I should have it done. I never thought it would end up this good.

"I am very patriotic and want England to win the World Cup, it would give everyone a boost as the way the economy has been, times have been hard.

"This is sending out a message to support them and be positive. People have been beeping their horns as they go past, it has been fantastic.

"I was very surprised when Julie said that is a good idea, but she has been very supportive and been out shopping buying the bunting.

I believe we have got a chance of winning the World Cup, I was only two when we won it before so it's about time."

Wife Julie, aged 45, a wages clerk, added: "He couldn't believe I would let him have it done but his passion is for England and the World Cup is only once every four years.

"But as soon as it is over, the roof is off."
