Two men had a lucky escape after their convertible car careered off the M54, and a police officer had to be taken to hospital after a spate of crashes over the weekend.

The soft-top convertible plunged down a 30ft bank onto a lane after leaving the motorway between junctions 6 and 7.

It fell through trees and came to rest in Golf Links Lane, Wellington, Telford.

The two men, in their 20s, had escaped by the time emergency crews arrived at 8pm on Saturday, and were treated at the scene for multiple minor injuries.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman John Hawker said: "Considering the damage to the vehicle in the crash, and the length of the fall, the occupants of the car were fortunate not to have suffered more serious or even fatal injuries."

Earlier, a policewoman needed hospital treatment after a patrol car was involved in a three-vehicle shunt during a downpour in Norton Road, Norton, Stourbridge, on Saturday.

The road was closed for more than an hour following the smash at 11am.

The officer was treated for minor injuries and taken to Russells Hall Hospital. On Saturday night a two-car crash near Wednesfield saw one man taken to New Cross Hospital with severe chest pains.

The two cars collided near a bridge on Lichfield Road and the drivers were outside their cars when firefighters from Willenhall station arrived at the scene.

The casualty, who was suffering with pains to the chest, was receiving basic first aid from a member of the public before fireman and paramedics arrived.
