An elderly man out walking with his wife in Staffordshire was knocked down by a car and killed.

Several roads were brought to a standstill after the collision in Lichfield yesterday afternoon, close to the entrance of Beacon Park and the city's memorial gardens, on Beacon Street.

The man, in his 80s was pronounced dead at the scene after being knocked down by the black Ford Fiesta at around 1.10pm. He has not yet been named.

His wife, also in her 80s, suffered a grazed thumb and did not need hospital treatment. Police arrested a woman aged in her 50s from Lichfield.

Beacon Street and Bird Street were closed for several hours while police carried out investigations, causing traffic tailbacks.
