Baby girl airlifted to hospital

A young child was flown to hospital after being thrown against the windscreen when a car hit a barrier and a tree in a crash on the A38 near Lichfield.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 2.45pm on Saturday.

Three women in their 20s and 30s and two children from the Sheffield area were in the Vuaxhall Meriva whioch went up a bank before rolling over.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to release two of the women who were trapped in the car which had been travelling south on the dual carriageway south of Capper's Lane when it went off the road.

The injured girl, aged 18 months, was taken by the Midlands Air Ambulance to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

She had hit the windscreen and suffered a head injury.The three women were also taken to Good Hope Hospital, Sutton Coldfield for treatment for whiplash and bruising.

Crew manager Alan Kimber, of Lichfield fire station, said it took them about 20 minutes to release the women, who initially had suspected spinal injuries, by cutting the roof off the carHe said another child and its grandmother had got out of the car before they arrived on scene.
