Bright new star Diana Vickers has herself to thank for chart-topping success - and not Simon Cowell. The X Factor mogul first got her noticed but last night's gig in Wolverhampton proved she has the talent to be a pop star on her own terms.
A quirky contender who was clearly not from the pop wannabe production line on the top TV show in 2008, she dodged the holiday camp route of several fellow finalists and reinvented herself, earning respect on the West End stage in a revival of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.
Now, at the age of 18, she has burst on the UK pop scene with her No1 debut album Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree and hit single Once.
The blonde bombshell from Blackburn opened her 50-minute set with the up-tempo The Boy Who Murdered Love.
Highlights included the summery Jumping Into Rivers, the ballads Numb and Four Leaf Clover, and the catchy Just Say Yes written by Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody.
