The wife of Wolves legend Phil Parkes, who raised thousands of pounds for charity over the past 15 years, has lost her battle with cancer.

Tributes were today paid to Maureen Parkes, who died at the couple's home in Wolverhampton after a 10-week battle with stomach cancer.

The 62-year-old from Fordhouses had beaten breast cancer 15 years ago and raised thousands of pounds for New Cross Hospital in thanks for the care she received.

Former goalkeeper Mr Parkes, aged 62, who played for Wolves between 1966 and 1978, today paid tribute to a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

He said: "She was just a lovely, loyal, elegant lady who always made sure she looked her best. The way she dealt with cancer was unbelievable, she never complained. We are all devastated that she is gone, it came as such a shock."

Ten weeks ago Mrs Parkes was fit enough to walk four miles, five times a week.

After complaining of stomach pain doctors found she had cancer. She died on April 4.

The funeral will be held at St Anthony's RCChurch, in Fordhouses, on April 21.
