The ring road in Wolverhampton will partially shut for five nights next week due to work to widen the Penn Road island, it was announced today.

Drivers will be diverted in the opposite direction during the closures, which will be in force from Monday between 7pm and 6am.

The clockwise stretch between Snow Hill towards Penn Road will shut Monday-Wednesday, followed by the anti-clockwise stretch on Thursday and Friday.

Wolverhampton City Council spokesman Gurdip Thandi said today the work was timed for evenings to minimise disruption.

The work on Penn Island is being done in three phases and is expected to cost in the region of £5 million.

The first phase involves creating additional lanes to ease congestion.

The second phase would see a skate park in the sunken island dismantled while a retaining wall is built and the road is widened.
