Two stalwarts who have run a popular youth club in Staffordshire for 16 years have been honoured by their town council for their community work.

John Bradley and John Mears were chosen as the recipients of Hednesford Town Council's annual good citizen award.

The two Johns run the Florence Street Methodist Church Youth Club in Hednesford, which is based in the hall at the back of the church.

They visited the council offices at Pye Green Community Centre this week to receive their awards.

"It is very rewarding. We get so much thanks from parents," said 73-year-old Mr Bradley, who lives near the church in Florence Street, as does Mr Mears, aged 78.

Both have been members of the church for nearly half a century.

The club meets on Tuesdays at 6.30pm for eight to 12-year-olds and on Thursdays from 6.30pm to 9pm for 12s and over.

"On Tuesdays we average about 45 to 50 youngsters. There is so much demand that we have had to set up a waiting list for membership," added Mr Bradley.

Town clerk Peter Harrison said that the council hoped to get more nominations for young people.

Mr Bradley and Mr Bears both received a commemorative certificate and a limited edition town council plate from council chairman Councillor Alan Pearson.

A contribution of £100 has also been made to youth club fund from the council.

Councillor Pearson said they were great examples of local people quietly serving their local community.
