Plans have been lodged for a 108-bedroom hotel and restaurant in Lichfield city centre.

Developer Tribecka today confirmed it has applied to partially demolish the former Kwik Save supermarket building on Tamworth Street.

It will be replaced with a large hotel, restaurant, bar and retail shop.

The building, in a prominent city centre position, has been boarded-up and out-of-use for around 18 months.

Stowe ward councillor Bernard Derrick backed the plans and said residents will be excited by the development.

"We are crying out for quality hotel accommodation in Lichfield, not only for visiting business executives but also for tourists," he added.

"Tourism represents a significant chunk of the council's money pot, and this development could boost us commercially, financially and in terms of jobs.

"Residents have been asking questions about what is going to happen and there have been various stories, but we now have an idea about where we're going with it and I think it's good news for Lichfield."

Two separate applications have been lodged because one of them specifically addresses the necessary demolition work.

Plans will now be considered by council planning officers before going before the planning committee.
