A builder who crashed his high-speed Mercedes CLK 250 into a lamp post after a night out was almost twice the drink drive limit, a court has heard.

Paul Davies, of Moseley Road, Bilston, was arrested by police after crashing his car on Deans Road, Wolverhampton on September 20.

District Judge Graham Wilkinson, sitting at Wolverhampton Crown Court, heard police responded to calls of an accident to discovered Mr Davies' car had lost control and collided with a lamp post.

Davies pleaded guilty to drink driving.

Prosecutor Mrs Jayne Yeomans said: "The defendant was sitting in the car. The police officers could smell intoxicants on his breath. He was given a roadside breath test which he failed."

She said Davies was taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the crash where a blood alcohol level found he had 136mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood where the legal limit is 80mg.

Defending Mr Kevin Good said his client drunk "more than he appreciated."

District Judge Graham Wilkinson said he had no sympathy and that Davies was lucky he had hit a lamppost instead of a family.

He told him: "You are going to be banned from driving for 20 months."Davies was also fined £300 and ordered to pay costs totalling £85.~
