More than 220 names have been added to a petition in support of keeping Royal Mail's delivery office in Bilston open.

Campaigners launched the petition after claims the office in Hall Street was earmarked for closure.

Around 60 people are based at the branch.

Gary Perry, Wolverhampton branch secretary of the Communications Workers Union, said postmen and women have been told they will have to travel four miles to Tipton to sort the mail and then return to Bilston to make their deliveries.

Mr Perry said: "We are hoping the petition will gain plenty of support and thousands of people will add their names. We are waiting to hear from Royal Mail on what is going to happen to the Bilston office."

A Facebook group opposing the closure has also been set up and already has 1,380 members. Campaigners have until July 3 to sign up to the petition at: www.number10.gov.uk

Royal Mail has refused to confirm or deny the closure.
