Motorists caught speeding in Staffordshire are to be given a new interactive DVD on speed awareness as part of a project to help them avoid a fine.

Drivers caught breaking the speed limit are offered the chance of going on a speed awareness course as an alternative to prosecution. Now with the help of a £20,000 grant Staffordshire County Council is offering drivers a speed DVD for them to take away after the course.

It is estimated as many as 13,000 to 15,000 people go on the courses each year rather than pay a fine for speeding.

The council received a £20,000 grant from the Safer Roads Partnership which will fund around 19,500 DVDs which should last for up to 16 months.

The SpeedSense DVD is being offered to drivers who attend the session and gives people the chance to practice what they have learnt.

The course looks at why people exceed the speed limits and helps drivers to develop a personal speed awareness strategy. The free interacive DVD will be given to people following completion of the course.

Staffordshire County Councillor Mike Maryon, cabinet member of road safety, said : "We receive hundreds of positive comments about the courses, with many suggesting that all drivers should be given the opportunity to attend.

"Whilst this is not an option as it is offered only as an alternative to prosecution, the development of SpeedSense means that many more people will have the opportunity to enhance or refresh their driving skills and in the comfort of their own home."
