The attack happened just before 12.30am today outside the Anchor Inn in Chester Road.
A 44-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital.
A man has been arrested and is currently in custody helping police with their inquiries.
Queues stretched back for up to half-a-mile from the Chester Road A452 and Lichfield Road A461 junction north and southbound.
Roads closed this morning included High Street to Chester Road from the junction at Ogley Road to the junction with Friezland Lane.
Lindon Road was also closed from the junction with Chester Road to the junction with Harley Close. Some businesses were able to open as normal today but said the High Street in Brownhills was empty.
Mark Walker, aged 42, from Kwik-Fit, High Street, said: "It was extremely quiet this morning, the High Street was like a Sunday. Most of the businesses were trading and had managed to open up but there was no one around at all."
