A Tory councillor in Wolverhampton was this afternoon cleared of possession of cocaine by a court.

Ian Bisbey, aged 31, was found not guilty by a judge after the prosecution offered no evidence against him.

The Oxley representative mouthed the words "thank you" to Judge John Warner as he left the dock following legal argument at Wolverhampton Crown Court

He was appearing alongside fellow councillor Carl Husted, aged 30, from Stowheath Lane, Stow Lawn, who today pleaded not guilty to possession of cocaine.

The Bushbury North Conservative councillor was given unconditional bail ahead of his trial on June 9.

Both men were arrested near Bisbey's home in Eastney Crescent, Pendeford, on July 25, following a night out in the city centre.

Councillor Bisbey told the Express & Star this afternoon: "I'm pleased that the legal system has prevailed."

Bisbey resigned from his £13,400-a-year role as chairman of the council's safer communities scrutiny panel.
