Freezing temperatures today caused chaos on the roads, forcing motorists to cope with sheet ice amid warnings that it is set to get even colder.

Temperatures plummeted as low as -14C (7F) in the West Midlands last night, causing snow to turn to ice.

Across the whole region temperatures are likely to drop to -12C (10F) tonight, but it will be colder in rural areas.

Motorists were stuck in long tailbacks along some of the region's busiest routes. More than a mile of traffic built up along Tettenhall Road this morning. There were also queues on Wednesfield Road and on main routes in Birmingham, Dudley and Walsall.

Two accidents on the M6 caused delays this morning. An accident caused delays at the southbound West Bromwich exit, while a broken down tanker caused traffic to build up at junction 8 on the northbound side.

A car crashed into The Television and Video Centre in Wednesbury yesterday afternoon after skidding on the icy roads.

Virgin Trains cancelled four trains an hour through the West Midlands after ice created problems at its Oxley depot.

Met Office spokesman Helen Chivers said more snow showers were expected to hit the region at the weekend. The maximum temperature for today is expected to be -1(30F) .

All football games scheduled for this weekend on Wolverhampton Council's park pitches have been called off.
