The crash happened shortly before 7am between Junction 7 for Great Barr and Junction 6 at Spaghetti Junction.

At least two other cars are believed to have been dam-aged.

The rider of the motorbike, believed to be a man in his 40s was taken to Sandwell Hospital after complaining of back pain.

Two other people, believed to be the drivers of the cars, were treated at the scene.

Queues on the M6 southbound tailed back to the M54 at Junction 10A.

On the northbound carriageway traffic was slow from the crash scene to Junction 5 for Castle Bromwich, a distance of six miles, as people slowed down to look at the debris.

An office worker from Wolverhampton caught up in the traffic said: "It was very frustrating as I was travelling on the opposite side to the crash, but traffic was backing up badly. Debris was spread out across all of the lanes and there was fuel on the road."

Traffic was also backing up to Junction 2 at Oldbury as traffic queued to get onto the M6 at Junction 8.
