It was another diamond day for one Coseley married couple as they celebrated 60 happy years together.

Irene and Ray Roberts were wed at Wednesbury registry office without any of the frills modern weddings are known for.

Irene, aged 78, and Ray, aged 81, believe that keeping things simple was the secret to long-lasting happiness.

Mr Roberts said: "We couldn't afford a photographer, or go on honeymoon, but things like that weren't as important then. My advice to any couple just starting out would be just to make sure you marry the right person – and don't start a family until you're married."

The pair have lived in their home in Milton Road for 53 years, where they have raised their eight children Patricia, Janet, Irene, Billy, Peter, Kevin, Gary and Wayne, and often play host to their 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

To celebrate their special day last Thursday, the family arranged for a surprise meal.

Eldest child Patricia Hitch, aged 57, said: "My parents always worked hard, putting their children first. Now they do the same for Missey, who is their baby and they thoroughly adore her."
