Severn Trent Water has vowed to clean up a stinking pool in Cheslyn Hay which residents claim has not been cleaned out for 10 years and is causing rats to invade their gardens.
Severn Trent Water has vowed to clean up a stinking pool in Cheslyn Hay which residents claim has not been cleaned out for 10 years and is causing rats to invade their gardens.
The water authority has said it will take action and clean up the pool in Sutherland Way after residents compiled a 500 name petition demanding action. Residents say the stench from the pool especially during the hot weather is horrendous and say it has become a dumping ground with all sorts of unidentifiable rubbish in it.
But Gill Dickinson, spokeswoman for Severn Trent Water, said plans were under way.
"We understand the concerns expressed by local residents. We are hoping to be able to clear up both the pond and the brook in the next week or so," she said.
Lynn Palfreyman, who is leading the campaign, lives on nearby Westbourne Road and takes her dog walking by the pool.
She said she was delighted that Severn Trent Water had finally decided to take action and clean up the pool.
She said: "I don't think that pool has been cleaned for nearly 10 years and it is supposed to be cleaned every year.
"There is all sorts of rubbish thrown in it. I know dogs which have swum in it and been covered in a disgusting black slime.
"It has taken days for its owners to get them clean.
"It appears Severn Trent Water are finally going to do something about this pool. It is about time.
"The residents have had enough and are complaining about rats invading their homes. Hopefully when it is cleaned up the problems will be resolved."
Severn Trent Water have contacted councillor Mac Harris, chairman of Cheslyn Hay Parish Council, to say the work will be carried out soon.
He said: "We have been putting the pressure on Severn Trent Water for quite some time."
