Lucky escape as car lands close to track
A woman had an amazing escape after her car ploughed 65ft down a railway embankment in Stourbridge, landing on its roof yards from the track.
She managed to scramble from the wreckage shaken but uninjured following the late-night smash in Worcester Lane.
The vehicle finished up in a field yards away from the busy Stourbridge Junction to Worcester railway line after it crashed through brambles and bushes.
The crash site is near a small road bridge and the entrance to Stourbridge Golf Course.
Residents believe the car may have been travelling towards Oldswinford when it struck the fence and went into the undergrowth on Saturday.
Householders living close to the site claim the section of road is an accident blackspot and are calling for permanent traffic safety measures to be introduced.
Resident Jim Higgs says he has been in contact with ward councillors and the police about the problems on the road.
He said the road had had a flashing speed indicator sign for a while but this had been removed.
"She could have been killed but someone will be killed down there one day," he said.
"Accidents happen all the time. It's not the first time that people have gone through the fence.
"The councillors have been good and have tried to get something done down here but sadly this just keeps happening.
"We need some speed bumps or something."
Ward Councillor Colin Wilson said he was concerned for pedestrian safety and the possible tragic consequences of a vehicle ending up on the railway line.
"The car would have been on the railway line if it had not landed in a ditch by the track," he said.
"I think the police and other authorities need to seriously consider some measures to stop this happening."
Fire crews from Brierley Hill and Woodgate Valley attended the crash at around 11pm. Watch commander Nick Lacey said the woman had got out her car before they arrived.
