Jobs on way in Asda plan

Supermarket giant Asda is planning a multi-million pound expansion to its Oldbury store, creating new jobs and transforming derelict land, the Express & Star can reveal.

Fifty new jobs will be created under the plans for the branch on Wolverhampton Road.

A derelict 13-acre site next to the store will be transformed with a new petrol station, new ambulance base and 170 extra car parking spaces.

The supermarket will be extended by around 11,840 sq ft, and two new units will be built for other businesses to occupy. The plans will allow an expansion of Asda's George clothing range and wider aisles.

Asda property communications manager Chris Marlow said today: "Since our store in Oldbury opened it has become an important and established supermarket for local people.

"However, shopping needs have changed significantly and the store is in need of updating and improving. These proposals will allow us to do just that."

West Midlands Ambulance Service today confirmed it is working closely with Asda.

Councillor Bob Badham regeneration boss at Sandwell Council said: "The store has proved very successful and the fact there could be new jobs created here is great news for Sandwell."

Plans will be available to view in the store this Friday and Saturday.
