Chris Nuttall will begin his appointment on January 2 reporting directly to the Dean of Lichfield, the Very Rev Adrian Dorber.

He will manage the day-to-day business of the cathedral, ensuring that people, finance and assets are used effectively

Mr Nuttall will face the challenge of managing the current financial situation, ensuring that staff and volunteers are well-led, looked after and motivated, and ensuring that the current building and conservation work is completed safely and to schedule.

The Dean said: "I am delighted that we have been able to recruit Chris. He brings to the cathedral administrator's role a wealth of business and operational experience in addition to a proven track record of being a popular, caring and intelligent senior manager.

"Chris is a committed Christian and shares the values the Cathedral lives by and wants to foster.

"We look forward to welcoming him and working with him."

Mr Nuttall, the son of a congregational minister, was born in Oxted and grew up in Darlington, Nottingham and Coventry before doing a degree in economics at Manchester University.

While there he made a personal Christian commitment and joined a local inner-city Anglican Church where he met his wife, Chenda, then a nurse.

They moved to Nottingham where he worked for Boots as an IT Senior Project Manager and lived there for more than 20 years.

In 2005 Mr Nuttall became Operations Manager for CARE (Christian Action Research and Education) based in Westminster with responsibility for the operational aspects of the charity.

Earlier the couple moved to Stafford as Mrs Nuttall has taken a position as a schools worker at a Methodist Church in Stafford, while their three grown-up children are moving forward with their careers and furthering their education at university.
