Weekly bin collections scrapped

Plans to re-introduce weekly bin collections in the Wyre Forest district have been scrapped and weekly recycling collections will now become fortnightly.

The district council announced in October it planned to re-instate weekly collections and collect recycling waste at the same time.

However, plans being put to the council cabinet committee on Tuesday aim to maintain fortnightly refuse collection and collect recycling on alternate weeks.

Council bosses say people will get larger wheelie bins instead of small boxes for recycling to make up for longer waits for collections.

It is also planned to trial a paid-for garden waste collection service to about 5,000 homes for £30 per year.

If plans are backed they approval on December 2. New collection times would then be rolled out across the district by next summer.

Councillor Fran Oborski said: "The simple fact is restoring the weekly collection is just not affordable."

Council chiefs today denied the move was a cost-cutting measure and said it would allow more materials to be collected for recycling.

Councillor Nathan Desmond, cabinet member for resources, said the scheme was the largest investment in waste services since the recycling service was introduced.
