Anger as road is still flooding

Parts of a busy road into Kidderminster is continuing to flood in heavy rain – despite work to resurface the route just days ago.

Torrents of water have gushed across the carriageway near the traffic island on Stourbridge Road over the past few days.

And a large pool of calf-deep water has gathered further along the road, near to the Broadwaters Inn and the mini traffic island, creating a hazard for thousands of drivers.

A ward councillor today said he was "appalled" at the situation and believed the resurfacing completed last week would have dealt with the long-standing problem.

But Worcester County Council today said the flooding had been caused by blocked drains in the area and was not due to a fault in the new road surface.

Mayor Howard Martin, district representative for Broadwaters, said Councillor Martin said the areas affected by flooding posed a serious danger to motorists.

"The situation in Stourbridge Road is very serious," he said.

"It was my firm belief the work over the past week to resurface the carriageway was to deal with this situation," he said.

"I am frankly appalled this has not been dealt with as part of the resurfacing and will be asking Worcester County Council to go back and look at the situation again."

Worcester County Council's cabinet member for transport and safe environments Councillor Derek Prodger said today: "We will be clearing the area of this debris as soon as possible to try to ensure any further rain is able to drain away as normal.

"The situation was in no way related to the resurfacing."
