Rents for struggling market halved
Rents at Brownhills' struggling Tuesday market have been halved to just £10 just two months after being relaunched to attract new traders.
It follows news that about 15 stallholders trade on Tuesdays compared to up to 70 sellers on Saturdays.
Walsall Market Traders Association Tony Larner vice chairman said: "I am pleased with it, I think it will be very good and attract people to the market. It is a good rent and will bring people in because it will be the cheapest in the Midlands."
The Silver Street market was relaunched by Walsall Council in September after a private operator pulled out. Traders have avoided Tuesdays, blaming high rents.
Walsall regeneration chief Councillor Adrian Andrew said today: "It's worth remembering that the market was re-launched at the height of a recession and may take a little time to bed in. Our Saturday market is thriving and doing very well but we have recognised we need to give a bit of a boost to the Tuesday market to build confidence back up at what has been one of the Midlands' premier markets.
"This is an introductory offer on Brownhills market that will last until April."
Brownhills market is to keep operating every Saturday and Tuesday 9am-4pm.
