Sally Feeley, 42, originally from Great Barr, was pronounced dead in hospital after suffering a deep cut to her armpit in a freak accident in Nerja, near Malaga.

It is believed Ms Feeley had been out celebrating Aston Villa's win over Chelsea when she tripped and landed on top of a glass which smashed under her, cutting an artery.

Friends and waiters at the Cafeteria Mediterraneo terrace bar in Nerja tried to stem the flow of blood with wet towels and napkins. She was taken to the Cormarcal de Axarquia hospital in Velz where she died in the early hours of Monday.

Spanish newspaper Sur reported that she worked as a hairdresser and had been resident in Nerja for several years.

Her friends have posted tributes on the social networking website Facebook.

Fiona Fleming wrote: "My thoughts and prayers are with Sally's family. So So sad."

Sandra Smith, who said her friend had moved to Spain for a better quality of life, wrote: "Those of us who had the privilege of knowing Sally will all remember her with love..RIP mate. xx."

Others described her as "lovely" and "full of fun".

Ms Feeley leaves a 12-year-old son named Shea.

The grieving boy also paid tribute to his mother on Facebook.

He wrote: "R.I.P Mom I will never forget you. XXXXXXXX."

Janet Birkett, a close friend of Ms Feeley's, rents a house in Stanford Avenue, Hamstead, since she moved to Spain.

She said: "There is nothing bad you could say about Sally, she was extremely kind and ever so popular.

"When she last came back a few months ago we went to the pub and everyone knew her and was asking how she was getting on."

Mrs Birkett, aged 66, met Ms Feeley while she was a 16-year-old trainee hairdresser.

Sally's death was being investigated by police, but a spokeswoman, said: "It appears to have been a terribly tragic accident."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "Her next of kin are aware and are receiving consular assistance."
