Geoff Inskip, chief executive of Centro, will see his salary rise to £155,000 a year in September 2010. His £131,000 pay was deemed too low when compared to other transport authorities.

But his rise has been staggered to avoid a public backlash. Centro regulates bus, train and tram operators in the West Midlands. Centro spokesman Steve Swingler said: "The chief executive's salary needs to be increased to bring it in line with the industry standard."

Fiona McEvoy, of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "This rise amounts to more than many people earn in a year."
