DOGEYE 1 AE 23She was named after the well-known phrase 'damsel in distress' after arriving at a rescue centre with a serious eye condition.

Now this six-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier is being nursed back to health and is looking for a new home.

Damsel was a stray discovered wandering the streets of Kingswinford before being picked up and taken to Rosedene Animal Rescue Centre in Radley Road, Rushall.

On arrival at the centre she was checked over by vets who found she was almost completely blinded with dry eye.

The condition stops her producing tears and if left untreated can cause permanent blindness.

She is now being treated for the condition and is almost back to her best, though will have to have eye drops for the rest of her life. Volunteers are now keen to find her a home.

Volunteer John Wright said: "We named her Damsel because she was a damsel in distress when she came in.

"Fortunately we got Damsel when we did and she is a lot better now, but she will probably have to have ointment for the rest of her life.

"The problem is because her eyes sometimes get dry and look closed up sometimes people just walk straight past her and ignore her, which is a shame because she is a lovely dog and deserves a kind new home."
