A project to restore Stourport's canal basins has been crowned a winner in this year's national lottery awards - scooping a trophy and cash.

The live final of The National Lottery: Big 7 was screened on Saturday.

The Stourport scheme was announced best heritage project.

Community areas and tourist attractions, including a cafe-restaurant and a heritage room, were created as part of the £4 million project, which was completed last year.

The restoration project enabled canal structures such as locks and 28 buildings to be repaired and public areas were landscaped.

Prize money of £2,000 will be used to fund educational visits to the site for school children.

Programme manager, Chris Bailey, said: "It is an honour to have won this award. Our lottery funding has been vital to this extensive restoration project."
