Rachel Horne is applying to take part in the race next April to help other widows to get away on holidays or short breaks.

Her 27-year-old husband Jonathan, known as Jay, died after an explosion in Helmand province on July 10 while carrying a wounded comrade.

Rachel, aged 25, of Tipton, was taken away on a short break to Whitby, North Yorkshire, with others earlier this month by a small group set up by the Army to help relatives of fallen soldiers.

"It was a lovely break and I would like to show my support for what is a great idea," she said.

"It is not a registered charity yet and needs all the support it can get.

"If I am given a place, then I'll start training."

Cpl Horne's mother, Jane Whitehouse, of Delves, Walsall, said: "We will all be there to give Rachel support if she does get a place."

Some of Cpl Horne's family will be attending a fundraiser at The Orchard pub, Thorncroft Way, Yew Tree estate, near West Bromwich, tomorrow from midday to 9pm. Live music, food, raffles, stalls and a bouncy castle are among the attractions.
