Residents raised the alert after seeing that a 400m stretch of Stourbridge Canal, neighbouring the Red House Glass Cone attraction in Wordsley, had no water in it.

The drained section was between two locks, with water at its normal level on either side. An emergency team from British Waterways was being sent to the scene today to investigate.

A 36-year-old resident, who asked not be named, said she was shocked to see the canal's bed was visible.

British Waterways spokes- man Keith Bradfield said a team were on site today. He said that the problem was being treated as possible vandalism to the system of locks.
