Stan Haden, of Worcester Lane, Pedmore, suffered a detached retina and severe bleeding in the attack in Hagley Road, Oldswinford, Stourbridge.

Officers have been examining CCTV footage as they attempt to identify the offenders and they are now trying to trace a dark coloured Peugeot believed to be involved in the incident.

Officers want to hear from members of the public who may have been in the area at the time and saw what happened.

Mr Haden, a 56-year-old building contractor, was walking with his brother Terry when the missile was hurled from the moving car on July 27.

Mr Haden is to undergo surgery in the next few weeks but doctors are not optimistic about restoring his vision.

A police spokesman said: "We want to hear from anyone in the area at 10pm on that night. CCTV is still being examined and we have also carried out door-to-door enquiries in the area." People with information are asked to call 0845 113 5000.

Two other people were attacked in the same way on the same night but suffered only minor injuries.
