A mother-of-two has been jailed after she stabbed the father of her children ten times in a frenzied attack.

Lisa Smith, aged 20, stabbed her partner Terry Grove at least twice in the chest and also stabbed him in the legs.

They had been drinking at a friend's house in Wallace Close, Oldbury. Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that she had suffered years of abuse at the hands of Mr Grove and had snapped after a day of arguments. She was jailed for two years yesterday after pleading guilty to wounding.

Mr Nicholas Smith, prosecuting, said: "They had been in a relationship for four years. When the attack happened she was 19 and he was 20.

"Terry Grove accepts that the last years of their relationship had been very rocky. At about 9.30pm on August 28, following extensive bickering, Lisa Smith had said to some friends that the injured party had held a knife to her throat.

"At some stage when Mr Grove announced he was going to take their son home he threw a knife down on the settee. Witnesses described how Lisa Smith picked up the knife and launching forward, stabbed him at least two times in the chest. She kept stabbing him."

He added that it was a small kitchen knife with a three-inch long blade. Mr Grove had a heart attack and had to be resuscitated by paramedics and spent nine days recovering at Sandwell Hospital.

Defending Smith, of Malton Avenue, Oldbury, Mr John Stevenson said: "This is a terrified young woman, she is described by friends as quiet, timid, and easily intimidated.

"The relationship was volatile and Miss Smith suffered frequent beatings and significant domestic violence. She was pushed around, punched, spat at, he would pull her hair and pour drinks over her.

"On one occasion he bit her hand, drawing blood."

He added: "The complainant was the person who had the knife, witnesses saw him remove it from his trousers and throw it down.

"What followed was spontaneous.

"Something that had been built up over the months if not years of abuse that Miss Smith had been subjected to," Mr Stevenson said.
