The zinc roof of the landmark building in Wednesfield village is practically finished – and contractors are now bang on schedule with the work ahead of its grand unveiling in spring next year. Today, it emerged that community groups will be moving into the development, which is being built on the corner of Rookery Street and Well Lane.

Bosses behind the project say it is set to house Wednesfield and Fallings Park Local Neighbourhood Partnership, as well as Wednesfield Community Association.

Work on the development, co-funded by Wolverhampton City Council with a grant of more than £1.4m from the Big Lottery Fund, started in March.

Project manager Pam Jones said: "The library will be on the ground floor, the library offices will be on the first floor and Wednesfield Community Association will be on the ground and first floor with a community hall and a community lounge.

"On the second floor there will be a small tower that will house the local neighbourhood partnership.

"The building itself takes a very modern form with a glazed frontage and timber and glazed cladding. There is also a zinc roof. We wanted it to be a landmark building, a fun building for people in the local area to use."

She said the block work for the two storeys was complete and the roofing panels were now being put on, adding: "We will shortly be looking at the electrical and mechanical fixings.

"It will be a real community building and people have been involved in its developments through focus groups as well. Things have gone well on the build so far, we have had excellent contractors GF Tomlinson Ltd."

While the library is being built, normal services will continue to be available from the existing Wednesfield Library in Church Road, where plans and artists' impressions of its replacement can be viewed.

It is not yet known what use the current library will be put to.
