A 16-year-old girl from Hednesford who was airlifted to hospital with a serious leg injury after she was knocked off her bicycle by a taxi is now in a stable condition in hospital, it has been revealed today.

The teenager, named locally as Jade Amison, from Pye Green Road, Hednesford, is recovering from her injuries at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.

It is believed her left leg became impaled by her bike handlebar when she was knocked off it by a taxi driver in a silver Vauxhall Vectra on Tuesday.

The collision happened at around 6.45pm on the Pye Green Road, close to Cemetery Road.

She was airlifted to hospital by the Cosford based air ambulance.

It is believed the taxi driver, aged 42, was pulling out of the junction when the girl cycled in front of him. Her bike went under the wheels of his car.

Only the actions of an off-duty nurse who helped to stem the flow of blood from her wound saved her life as she waited for paramedics.

Carol Evans, from Staffordshire Police, said: "The girl is currently in a stable condition in hospital and recovering from her injuries."

The student is believed to be awaiting the results of her GCSE's next week.

Witnesses to the accident call police on 0300 1234455.
