Search on for baths backer

Coseley baths could be saved at the 11th-hour if a financial backer can be found to buy the Pear Tree Lane-based pool from the council, it emerged today.

Councillor Dave Tyler has asked leisure chief Councillor David Stanley whether the council would consider a private bid to save the baths.

With time running out for the closure-haunted building, due to close for the final time on August 31, the council has confirmed a bid could not be ruled out.

The news is a boost to campaigners who are now scrambling against the clock to find someone to bankroll the scheme.

Council spokesman Phil Parker said: "We would remind any prospective interested parties that it is considered by the structural engineer that from September 1 the building cannot be used for current purposes until the roof has been replaced."

Councillor Tyler said while no buyer was yet in place he was optimistic an entrepreneur would step in.

"There may just be somebody who comes forward and sees an opportunity there," he said. "There is a great need for swimming facilities in this area or children will be forced to learn to swim in the canals."

Save Coseley Baths campaign spokesman Brian Guest said: "The group now begins the search to raise the money to buy the building, or find someone who will support the baths."
