An 82-year-old man has died after being knocked down by a motorcycle on a Black Country road.

Ambulance crews battled to save the injured pensioner by giving him first aid at the scene of the crash in Withymoor Road, Netherton.

He was taken to Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, by ambulance but was declared dead soon after arrival.

Police closed off the road both ways as he was treated and diversions were in place for more than an hour until police had cleared the wreckage from the road.

Police and paramedics had been called to Withymoor Road at its junction with Thistlegreen Road, Netherton, at 9.30am yesterday.

An ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were dispatched to the scene.

The victim was today named locally as Horace Shepherd of Netherton but his identity has not been confirmed by police.

A police sign was today in place near the scene urging witnesses of the crash to come forward.

Officers say they are piecing together the cause of the collision are eager to hear from anyone nearby at the time who saw what happened. Witnesses are asked to call the road policing unit at Dudley police station on 0845 113 5000.
