A plea has been made to stop a Stourport road from being used as a "rat run" amid fears a nearby supermarket development could cause more misery for drivers.

Councillors claim Lichfield Street is choked with traffic.

They say that motorists are using it to avoid the busy Gilgal one-way system.

They are concerned that when Tesco builds its new store in Severn Road it will increase the numbers of cars using the short-cut

Now Wyre Forest District Council leader John Campion has pledged to take up their cause with highways chiefs at the council council.

He said: "The Gilgal gets very busy and Lichfield Street is used as a rat-run. The situation in Lichfield Street will be made untenable if the proposed Tesco development on the former Carpets of Worth site goes ahead."

Councillor Mike Salter said: "We have had lots of queries from local residents and we are very pleased to press for action from the county council."

County council cabinet member for transport Councillor Derek Prodger said: "We have seen the letter from the council leader John Campion and will be doing our best to resolve the issues there."
