Muddy hell, we're trapped

It looks like sand but, as this West Midlands motorist discovered, it has the ability to swallow you up and make you look a fool.

When angler David Foster decided to drive to the seashore in his Honda 4x4 at Brean, Somerset, he found himself stuck fast. His mistake cost him the value of the £25,000 car – and he had hours to let it all sink in as curious tourists surrounded him and took souvenir photographs.

The mudflats are well-known for catching out unsuspecting holidaymakers.

Many victims are from the West Midlands, who are unaware that the Bristol Channel is notorious for its quicksands, and become stuck as the tide comes in.

Beach warden Pete Williams said Mr Foster, of Stourport-on-Severn, was distraught.

"The vehicle was so stuck there was not even any point in calling for help. He wasn't looking forward to telling his wife."

Mr Foster explained his mishap as "just one of those things".
